MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the American Society of Safety Engineers is to enhance the status and promote the advancement of the safety profession and to foster the technical, scientific, managerial and ethical knowledge, skills and competency of safety, health and environmental professionals for the protection of people, property and the environment.

1. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

GOAL: Plan, develop, and direct professional development opportunities for members and others to achieve preeminence in the safety, health and environmental fields.

Objective 1A: Provide a forum for the interchange and acquisition of professional knowledge by conducting technical sessions at Chapter meetings

Objective 1B: Send president-elect to the National Leadership Conference each year.

  • Strategy 1) Chapter to pay one half cost.

Objective 1C: Jointly promote co-sponsorship of seminars with area Safety Council and other professional organizations.

  • Strategy 1) Develop a list of professional organizations within our chapter with contacts.

2. MEMBERSHIP

GOAL: Enhance membership services and stimulate growth.

Objective 2A: Increase membership (by 5%) by 1 July 2005.

  • Strategy 1) Encourage present members to sponsor new members in each newsletter.

  • Strategy 2) Annually, send a membership application to each member with the membership roster.

  • Strategy 3) Promote ASSE membership to students in the Occupational Health & Safety Programs at Quinsigamond Community College and Anna Maria College.

Objective 2B: Conduct a membership survey every two years (even numbered years).

  • Strategy 1) Phone questionnaire, if used, completed by end of April.

  • Strategy 2) Survey should be short and easy to use.

  • Strategy 3) One question should be "Are you interested in certification as a CSP?"

  • Strategy 4) A Fax number will be provided to encourage response

Objective 2C: Offer access to NEXTSTEP website to all Chapter members.

Strategy 1) Designate one member to serve as "placement person". This person will distribute information on job opportunities to any member requesting the information.

Strategy 2) Use Chapter newsletter to announce job openings.

Objective 2D: Contact new members to encourage them to attend the next meeting.

  • Strategy 1) Place new members names in Newsletter.

3. RESOURCE ACCOUNTABILITY

GOAL: Develop and maximize resources to accomplish the purposes, goals and objectives of the Chapter.

4. COMMUNICATIONS

GOAL: Develop effective methods to communicate with the membership.

Objective 4A: Provide chapter members with a timely and informative newsletter relating chapter activities.

  • Strategy 1) Appoint a newsletter editor and publisher.

  • Strategy 2) Establish the following dates as "mail dates"; September 1, November 1, December 1, February 1, March 1 and June 1.

  • Strategy 3) Publish Chapter meeting topics and dates no less than 3 months in advance.

Objective 4B: Publish meeting notices to members at least 3 weeks before the meeting date.

  • Strategy 1) Include listing of next meeting date/topic on each meeting notice and provide meeting listing at each chapter meeting.

Objective 4C: Obtain ASSE Society information materials (i.e., educational seminar brochure, materials catalogs, pamphlets and ASSE membership, etc.) and make available at all chapter meetings.

5. PUBLIC AFFAIRS

GOAL: Promote and enhance national and international relations with associations, governmental agencies, standards organizations, public groups and professional societies.

Objective 5A: Participate in National safety initiatives

Objective 5B: Participate in Community Affairs

  • Strategy 1) Investigate assistance to a local organization, such as the Fire Department.

Objective 5C: Mail meeting notices and technical seminar information to newspapers in the region.

  • Strategy 1) Appoint a Public Relations person

  • Strategy 2) Develop list of media contacts (Community Calendar).

  • Strategy 3) Develop a website

6. PROFESSIONAL IMAGE AND QUALIFICATIONS

GOAL: Establish, promote and maintain professional standards and qualifications for those engaged in the profession.

Objective 6A: Establish a process to nominate a Chapter and Area Safety Professional of the Year.

7. BODY OF KNOWLEDGE

GOAL: Develop, review and publish research, technical and educational materials.

8. MARKETING

GOAL: Establish effective marketing strategies to enhance the Chapters ability to achieve its mission.

10. GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS

GOAL: Actively participate in the development of laws, rules, standards and regulations that affect the safety profession.

  • Strategy 1) Appoint a member of the executive committee to monitor Governmental Affairs and inform the membership.

11. SCHOLARSHIPS/STUDENT SECTION

12. FOUNDATION

GOAL: To provide financial support to the ASSE Foundation for use in activities that promote the safety profession.

  • Strategy 1) Appoint the President Elect to plan a fundraiser.

Objective 12 A: Participate with other Chapters in the Area at the Area PDC by donating to the Silent Auction.

13. CHAPTER STAR

GOAL: To obtain national society recognition and publicity for superior performance in program development, membership growth and retention, conferences, public relations, awards and honors, among other criteria.

Objective 13A: Maintain minimum standards.

Objective 13B: Provide chapter administration with development opportunities to enhance the expertise of incoming chapter officers.

  • Strategy 1) Send president-elect, or other interested officers to the ASSE National Leadership Conference.

  • Strategy 2) Schedule a late July (early August) Executive Committee meeting to provide guidance toward a smooth orientation of new chapter officers and succession of officers.

  • Strategy 3) Encourage all chapter officers to attend at least one Area Operating Committee Meeting per chapter year.
